2020—HK—Forwards—Backwards—2021
During the summer of 2023, my siblings and I embarked on a road trip across Gansu Province in China with one goal: to visit Dunhuang. Situated on the edge of Gansu, it was once a frontier garrison during the Han Dynasty and served as a gateway to China during the Silk Road period. Today, the city is mostly famous for a nearby attraction—the Mogao Caves, which are adorned with Buddhist statues and frescoes carved during the 14th century. With little expectation or knowledge of the area, we soon learned not only the stories of the past but also the realities of the present. China today faces a multitude of socio-economic problems, from a housing bubble crisis to a post-pandemic-fuelled domestic tourism boom. These photos aim to capture one locale of a vast nation, along with its beauty and challenges.
